Google’s AI Overviews now answer a huge share of searches directly on the results page — no click required. The data on what that’s actually done to click-through rates is in, and it’s more nuanced than “clicks are dead.” Here’s the real breakdown.
The Numbers
- Search Engine Land’s 2026 coverage of a Seer Interactive study (53 brands, 5.47 million queries) found AI Overview click-through rates bottomed out around 1.3% in December 2025, then climbed to roughly 2.4% by February 2026, a real recovery, but still well below the 3-3.8% CTR on searches with no AI Overview at all.
- Within that same study, pages actually cited inside an AI Overview earned around 2.1% CTR, more than double the roughly 0.9% earned by uncited pages on the same results page.
- Separate research from Ahrefs found the presence of an AI Overview correlates with meaningfully lower click-through for the top-ranking organic result compared to similar searches without one.
- Pew Research Center’s behavioral study of real Google searches found users clicked through to a traditional result far less often when an AI Overview appeared, compared to when it didn’t.
- Zero-click searches, where a user gets their answer and never visits any website, have climbed into the majority of all Google searches, according to multiple independent tracking studies through 2026.
Why it matters: the click isn’t disappearing everywhere equally. It’s being redistributed, toward brands that get cited, and away from everyone else on the page.
Where AI Overviews Show Up Most
Not every search triggers an Overview. Based on the same research:
- Long, question-style searches trigger AI Overviews far more often than short, one- or two-word queries
- Comparison-style searches (“X vs Y”) trigger an Overview in the overwhelming majority of cases
- Even “near me” style local searches are increasingly showing Overviews layered on top of maps and local results
What this means for you: if your content strategy leans on comparison pages, how-to guides, or long-form question-answering content, you’re operating in the exact zone where AI Overviews now dominate the page.
Being Cited Beats Ranking #1
This is the single most important shift for anyone doing SEO in 2026: being cited inside the AI Overview now often matters more than your traditional blue-link position.
A page cited inside the Overview earns clicks at more than double the rate of an uncited page ranking below it — even if that uncited page technically ranks higher in the traditional results.
Pro Tip: Stop optimizing purely for position #1. Start optimizing for “would an AI system pull this exact paragraph as the answer?” Clear, direct, well-structured answers get cited. Vague, keyword-stuffed pages don’t.
What Traditional Results Still Win At
It’s not all Overview traffic. The research shows searches with no AI Overview present are actually seeing rising click-through rates over time, because AI Overviews are absorbing the quick, simple questions, leaving traditional results to handle the searches where people genuinely want to dig deeper.
That means:
- Product research and comparison shopping still drives real clicks to retailer and review sites
- Local business searches with strong intent (“book a table,” “call now”) still convert through traditional listings
- Niche, highly specific queries with no clean AI-generated answer still send traffic to the source
What to Actually Do About It
1. Structure content to be citation-ready. Direct answers near the top, clear headers, concise FAQ sections. This is what gets pulled into an Overview.
2. Track citations, not just rankings. Ranking #3 with a citation inside the AI Overview can now outperform ranking #1 without one. Start monitoring whether and how often your brand appears inside AI-generated answers, not just your position in the blue links.
3. Double down on the searches Overviews don’t fully answer. Comparison content, in-depth guides, and anything requiring genuine judgment (not just a factual lookup) still pulls real traffic, build more of it.
4. Don’t panic over falling CTR alone. A lower click-through rate on a query that now shows an Overview doesn’t automatically mean lost business, some studies note flat conversion volume even as raw clicks fall, because a smaller number of more-qualified visitors are clicking through.
Why It Matters
The brands treating this as “SEO is dying” are optimizing for the wrong outcome. The brands treating it as “the definition of a win just changed, from ranking to being the answer” are the ones building strategy for how search actually works now, not how it used to work two years ago.
